History of Major Camp Improvements
Haven't been to camp in a while - well, we've been busy.
Check out this list of improvements by year - better yet, come see them in person at a camp tour!
2019
- Officer's Quarters Renovation Major renovation to the building that our leadership staff lives in during the summer - right next to the ropes course.
- Dining Hall Improvements New flooring and improvements to the serving area.
- Septic System Upgrades More enhancements to our on-site septic system to further reduce Nitrogen and help protect our environment and the health of the Bay.
2018
Lighthouse Activity Center
The new home for a huge air-conditioned game room, camp store, and multiple additional classrooms. Oh...and it has a lighthouse!
- Waterfront restoration A massive restoration project to regain our lost beach area, reduce erosion, and create new nature and environmental study areas.
2017
- Bay Center meeting room relocated across campus check out this 2-minute time-lapse video We also added a huge deck to the front and renovated the inside as well.
2016
- Renovated Varsity Girls' Bathhouse
- Two new sports storage areas
- Another new gaga pit - our third
2015 - Celebrating 20 Years of Summer Camp
- Renovated JV Girls' Bathhouse
- More pool renovations including pumps, lining, tile and cover
- Improved waterfront dock system
- More campus beautification including paving, flowers, and planters
- More boats including laser pico sailboats and new sea-kayaks
2014
- Renovated and expanded Medical Center
- Two new Gaga pits!
- New roll-up canvas flaps on all cabins
- Renovated facade on Chesapeake Center including new stone columns and lighting
2013
- New sand equestrian arenas
- New ropes course element - Wallenda replaces Multi-vine
- Public address system - ability to broadcast logistic and emergency information throughout camp
- Fiberoptic cable, high-speed internet and improved campus wi-fi
- Renovated Pool House including stone work
2012
Solar Farm -157 kW solar array annually generating approximately 85% of the electricity needed each summer
- New landscaping at the Gym, Chesapeake Center, Medical Center, and Bay Center
- Upgraded entrance security gate
- Laser Pico sailboats for sailing classes
2011
Gym and Multi-purpose Center -the largest building project in SHC history. An 8300+ sq ft air-conditioned gymnasium complete with basketball and volleyball courts and a full performance stage.
- Double Zipline - twice the zipline - twice the fun!
- Ropes Pavilion - replaced the crew cabin as the central meeting place for all things Ropes Course
- Backup Generator - installed large backup electrical generator capable of powering nearly the entire facility
- Lights and fans in all one-week cabins
- 2nd Giant Swing on the ropes course
2010
- Waterfront Bathhouse Renovation - doubled the size of the boys' bathhouse behind the Dining Hall
- The Crossing - a new element on the ropes course
- Girls' Showerhouse
2009
- Major Swimming Pool Renovation - new deck, fencing, stone columns, coping, tile, and underground plumbing and filtration system
- Harbor Lodge - our 5th lodge which includes a full basement for creative arts classrooms
2008
- Major Dining Hall renovation and expansion - complete with heat and air-conditioning, interior trim, convenience bathrooms, handicapped ramp entrance, and additional serving space
- Cove Lodge - our 4th lodge
- Middle Bathhouse improvements
- Cottage renovation and expansion - the Property Manager's residence
2007
- Bay Center renovation
- Island Lodge - our 3rd lodge includes a full walk-out basement
- Big Switcheroo - boys and girls sides of camp switch
2006
- 1st Giant Swing - on the ropes course
- New North Bathhouse
- New Maintenance Storage building
2005
- Lighthouse and Windjammer Lodges - our 1st and 2nd lodges
- Optional Friday camper drop-off bus to DC area
- New cabin names by section of camp - Creeks (JV girls), Rivers (Varsity girls), Cities (JV boys), Bays (Varsity boys)
2004
- Completion of major new septic system - to support future new camp buildings
- Chesapeake Center bathrooms - new bathrooms and test layout for lodges
- Two seatings in the Dining Hall
2003
- New potable water storage and distribution system
- Construction begins on major new septic system
